Chapter 3, Server Installation
Chapter 3
Server Installation
Before installing Catapult Server, be sure to read Chapter 2, “Preinstallation Requirements.” It contains important information about installation.
When you install Catapult Server:
- The Proxy service is installed on the server and is added to Internet Service Manager (the administration tool provided with Microsoft Internet Information Server).
- The Remote Windows Sockets (RWS) service is installed on the server and is added to Internet Service Manager.
- The client configuration software is copied to the server, a client configuration file is created, and a shared folder named Iasclnt is created on the server. Any Windows-based computer that already has an Internet browser (or other client software) installed can then be configured to use the Remote Windows Sockets service on the server by running Setup from \\servername\Iasclnt.
To install Catapult Server
- Log on using a user account that has administrative privileges on the server.
- From the root directory of the Catapult Server compact disc, run Setup. Or copy the contents of the compact disc to a shared folder, connect the server to that share, and run Setup.
The Welcome dialog box appears.
- Click Continue.
The Install Catapult Server dialog box appears.
- To change the folder into which Catapult Server will be installed, click Change Folder and complete the dialog box that appears.
After you complete that dialog box, the Install Catapult Server dialog box returns.
- Click the Install Catapult Server button.
The Installation Options dialog box appears
- To determine which Catapult Server components will be installed, select or clear the check box for each option.
By default, all components are selected.
- To determine the types of clients that will be supported by the client configuration software that will be installed into the Iasclnt share, select the Install Catapult option, click the Change Option button, and complete the dialog box that appears.
By default, client configuration software is installed for computers that use Intel® processors and the Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows for Workgroups, and Windows 3.1 operating systems. Client configuration software is also installed for client computers that use the Windows NT operating system and the PowerPC™, Alpha AXP™, and MIPS® processors.
- When the installation options are set appropriately, click Continue.
The Choose Cache Drive dialog box appears. The server’s local drives are listed in the Available box.
- Select one or more drives from the Available box, and then click Select.
The selected drives are moved to the To Be Used box. The cache for the Proxy service will be installed on these drives. You must select at least one drive. See Chapter 4, “Server Features,” and Appendix A, “Architecture,” for more information about caching.
- Click OK.
The Network Configuration dialog box appears.
- Use the Network Configuration dialog box to define all the internal IP addresses of your network, and to exclude all the external IP addresses.
In this dialog box, each IP address pair in the Internal IP Ranges list identifies a range of addresses that are part of your private network. This information is used to create a Local Address Table (LAT). The LAT is stored in the Iaslat.txt file, located by default at C:\ias\clients. When a client computer runs the client Setup program, this table is downloaded from the server to the client. When an RWS client attempts to access an IP address, it uses the LAT to determine whether the address is inside the private network (and can be connected to directly) or is outside on the Internet (and therefore must be connected to through Catapult Server).
- To generate the list of IP address pairs from internal routing tables used by Windows NT Server, click Load from NT Internal Routing Table. A list of IP address pairs is then displayed in the Internal IP Ranges box. Verify that the list correctly identifies your internal network, and add or remove entries as necessary.
Note
Each IP address pair identifies a range of addresses. The second entry is not a subnet mask.
- To add a range of IP addresses to the list, under Edit type a pair of addresses in the From and To boxes, and then choose Add.
- To add a single IP address to the list, under Edit type the address in both the From and To boxes, and then click Add.
- To remove an IP address or address pair from the list, select it from the Internal IP Ranges box, and then choose Remove.
Following are some considerations to keep in mind when administering the Network Configuration dialog box:
- If you generate the list of internal addresses by clicking the Load from NT Internal Routing Table button and then remove an address from the Internal IP Ranges list, you can introduce redundant load on the server. This is because clients will remote the connections to that address through Catapult Server, when they are already connected to that computer on the internal network.
- If a valid internal IP address is missing from the list created by clicking the Load from NT Internal Routing Table button, then the client at that address will not be able to access Catapult Server. Catapult Server will view that computer as an external address and will block connections from it (for security purposes). Be sure to manually add any missing internal addresses to the list.
- Make sure that external (Internet) addresses are not entered in the Internal IP Ranges list. Doing so will add them to the LAT and will therefore identify them as internal addresses. This is a security breach and can provide unwanted external access to your private network computers. Also, an attempt by a client to connect to such an address will not be remoted through Catapult Server, and therefore that address will not be reachable from the private network.
- In most cases, the IP addresses of the server's internally-connected network adapter cards should be defined as internal addresses (by including them in the Internal IP Ranges list), and the IP addresses of its externally-connected cards should be defined as external IP addresses (by excluding them from the Internal IP Ranges list).
- Regardless of the addresses entered here, if the client is running only IPX/SPX, then any attempt to communicate over IP will be remoted through Catapult Server, even if the destination is on the private network.
- When the server is running both IPX/SPX and TCP/IP, you can optionally force HTTP, gopher and FTP proxy clients to communicate with the server using RWS over IPX/SPX, by defining all IP addresses of the server as external. For more information, see Chapter 4, “Server Features,” and Appendix A, “Architecture.”
- After you have installed Catapult Server, to modify the LAT table you will need to use the Setup program to change the information in the Network Configuration dialog box, as described in Removing, Reinstalling, or Reconfiguring Catapult Server. Or, you can edit the Iaslat.txt file directly.
- When the network configuration is properly set, click OK.
The Client Access dialog box appears. Use this dialog box to enter information that will be used by the client Setup program that Catapult Server Setup installs into the Iasclnt share.
- Use the choices under Remote Windows Sockets Access to specify how the client Setup program will configure clients to connect to this server. Select either Machine or DNS Name or IP Addresses. If you select Machine or DNS Name, verify that the name is correct. If necessary type the appropriate name.
If you select the Disable Access Control check box, all internal clients will be able to use the RWS service. When this check box is cleared (which is the default), only those clients that have been assigned permissions for specific protocols (using Internet Service Manager) will be able to use the RWS service.
See Chapter 5, “Server Configuration,” for more information about using Catapult Server with DNS, and about assigning client permissions.
- Under Proxy Access select Set Client Setup to Configure Browser Proxy Settings to have the client Setup program configure client browsers as a Proxy client.
If you select this option, verify that the name shown in the Proxy to be Used by Client box is correct. If necessary type the correct name.
Note If you select this option, when a client computer runs client Setup from the server's Iasclnt share, if the client browser is Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, client Setup attempts to configure that browser to use the specified proxy server. For more information, see Chapter 6, “Client Configuration.”
- When the Client Access dialog box is complete, click OK.
Setup installs Catapult Server.
